Rigatoni's Tuscan Oven

by Vanessa Daniel

Italians are warm, welcoming people who enjoy sharing the pleasures of life with others, so what else would you expect from a small, family owned Italian restaurant in the center of Tampa. Nestled away on busy Kennedy Boulevard between Himes and MacDill lies Rigatoni Tuscan Oven. This traditional Southern Italian style restaurant owned and operated by the Barcena family goes out of its way to make you feel as if you are in the comfort of an Italian home with its old family photographs that consume the walls, boisterous atmosphere full of diners laughing and conversing in friendly conversations, along with huge dishes of homemade pasta.

To Italians, food is culture, food is art, food is love, and food is passion. You feel this strong emphasis on the enjoyment of your dining experience the moment you walk through the door. With the strong aroma of garlic and spices emanating from the open kitchen, you are immediately drawn to your seat to enjoy the fresh bakers dozen of herbed garlic knots and fresh marinara sauce that accompany you as you view your menu. The menu consists of an abundance of classic Italian dishes such as baked ziti and stuffed shells; pollo picatta, marsala, or parmesan; and a few seafood dishes such as shrimp scampi and cernia a la livornese (fresh grouper with capers, garlic, kalamata olives, fresh tomatoes and Anchovies over penne pasta). A selection of signature and gourmet pizzas are also included on the menu, such as broccoli and sun-dried tomato and the Rigatoni's special - Italian sausage, meatballs, onions, peppers, mushrooms and pepperoni.

I started with the fried ravioli appetizer ($5.49) - four large homemade ravioli's filled with a ricotta cheese blend, then lightly breaded and drizzled with fresh parmesan cheese. I must have been in the mood for ravioli because I ordered the lobster ravioli ($19), a special of the day, which was served in a huge bowl filled with chopped asparagus, fresh spinach, chunks of lobster, and topped with its fresh bava sauce (a mix of the tomato and white sauces). I couldn't leave without trying one of Rigatoni's classics, its traditional lasagna - thick layers of lasagna overflowing with Italian sausage and three cheeses, then covered with a sweet but hearty red sauce. If the large portions don't fill you up, tempting desserts include tiramisu and fried New York style cheesecake. To add to its mouthwatering menu, the chef has selected a reasonably priced wine to complement each dish.

In today's world, the rise of chain restaurants has buried the idea of small, warm independent restaurants that comfort your palate. Rigatoni's brings this idea back to life with its classic Italian cuisine and friendly housewarming atmosphere. If you are looking for a delectable lunch or dinner, or possibly an event you need catered, Rigatoni's will not disappoint.
