TAMPA MUSEUM OF ART - THE CONTINUING STORY Interview with the Mayor
Another failed plan for the Tampa Museum of Art has gone away as Mayor Iorio presents a proposal for a two phase building to be located on city property on the North side of Curtis Hixon Park. Her proposal calls for a location on the Riverwalk Park adjacent to the Poe Garage and the planned Childrens Museum.
The Tampa Museum of Art is mostly in need of community support. It has been noteworthy that at various Town Meetings the Art Museum is a subject that seems to never be discussed. We applaud the Mayor's plans for allocating funds to restore Kiley Gardens - immediately south of the current Tampa Museum of Art. This unique park is a hidden Tampa treasure that additionally hides a necessary parking garage. We look forward to Kiley being returned to something of beauty.
With her proposal to allocate $17.5 million in County funds to the first phase museum building, it is clear that it is still not a done deal. The Museum Board and the City Council has yet to review the proposal. additionally, no real building plans or building costs are complete. Remember the doomed Vinoly plan incurred over 5 million in architect and design fees alone. Any number near that would not leave much for constructing an adequately sized museum.
We thank the Mayor for taking a few moments to talk with us - and to you - about the new Tampa Museum of Art proposal and the future of Kiley Gardens.
