SOHO SUSHI

by Vanessa Daniel

Located at the highly desired address of 311 South Howard Avenue in the SOHO district of South Tampa lies a new and upcoming sushi bar and restaurant.  Becoming known for its chic atmosphere and unique sushi rolls, SOHO sushi is creating a name for itself as the new see-and-be-seen place to be.  Having visited there on a crowded Wednesday night, this innovative spot was full of people looking for a trendy night on the town.

After entering the door, you walk into a dimly lighted room with warm colored tan and red walls, soothing music playing faintly in the background and hints of bamboo spread throughout the room.  The entire place is overflowing with original Japanese artwork, everywhere from the Japanese letters and designs painted on the wall, to the ceramic dishes set behind the chrome sushi bar.  I chose to sit at the community table, a large, 12-seat table that gives you the feel of hibachi at a Japanese steakhouse, minus the cooking of a chef in front of you.  If you like a more secluded spot to dine, there are multiple sizes of tables ranging from a two-person table for a couple on their first date, to one of its round high-top tables by the sushi bar for those who would like a more social setting.

After viewing its massive menu, you find the options range from hot and cold appetizers such as Tuna Tataki, and Dynamite Scallops - scallops baked in SOHO sauce and served on a bed of mushrooms - to entrees such as shrimp or chicken tempura, regular and specialty sushi rolls and desserts including fried caramel and banana cheesecake.  I started with the traditional miso soup filled with tofu, seaweed and scallions and then moved to the house salad, a fresh spinach-and-field-green salad topped with carrots and ginger dressing with a hint of peanut in the sauce.  For my appetizer, I chose the Tuna Tartar- spicy marinated raw tuna sliced into pieces, topped with flying fish roe and avocado, positioned on top of field greens and covered in a sweet sauce.  After the substantial-sized starter, I progressed to my sushi.  My first roll was the Mexican, crispy shrimp tempura, avocado and roe dipped in their spicy mayonnaise sauce.  Next was the Spicy Crunchy Tuna roll, a perfect blend of crunchy tempura chips and smooth pieces of spicy tuna with smelt roe on the outside.  The Spider roll - soft shell crab, green onion, avocado, and spouts - seemed very dry and needed spicy sauce to provide added flavor.  The last roll was one of SOHO sushi’s specialty rolls, and my personal favorite, the Green Menace.  It consisted of a scallop special with tempura chips, wrapped in avocado, and finished with a drizzle of the chef’s sweet and spicy sauces.

With all of the sushi bars located in the South Tampa area, this one has found its way to be a cut above the rest.  By catering to an upscale crowd and serving unique rolls not found at any restaurants around, this place is sure to be full of customers begging for more.  The location is perfect for a great bite to eat before heading out to the local bars, a trendy date, or a night out with the girls.
