The planned import of a unique small car in the Spring of 2008 helped attract a large crowd to Old Hyde Park Village for the opportunity to see and drive the car in person. About half the size of an average car, the Smart Car averages close to 40 miles per gallon on a gasoline engine. While recommended to use premium gas will spoil a little bit of the savings, the high mileage and compact size will get your attention. A red, blue, white, and black version were on display. With two seats and the engine located under the seats and near the rear, the smooth ride seems amazingly powerful and is capable of speeds near 90 mph. Prices will start on a base model near $12,500, add air conditioning and radio and you will be near $14,500. A convertible model is also available at an additional cost. Many of those at the Tampa test drive event had already reserved a car with a deposit anticipating the spring arrival. With a unique safety frame and the importing to be completed by Mercedes Benz, the Smart Car looks like a viable means of transportation for many in the urban environment. Smart Car representatives told us that the multi month roadshow had been met with exceptionally large crowds in the open west as well. With the demand for parking in Tampa, the Smart Car might not be a dumb idea.
