Over 15 different Native American Tribes were represented and over 3,000 people attended the three day PowWow held at the J. B. Starkey Ranch over the Sept 22-24 weekend.
With drummers and lots of tradition, the event was the first PowWow that Spirit People of American has held, but it will not be the last. More than 20 vendors offered a real look at unique items and regalia that reflected many different traditions and customs.
In the center was a ceremonial circle surrounded by the vendors and nearby an education area showing a reconstructed village that provided a glimpse of the lifestyle that once was. Starkey Ranch was a perfect location for the event.
The circle is always entered from the East as recognition to the rising sun. At the start of the Grand Entrance ceremony, each participant was doused in white smoke as a cleansing process. A grass dancer first entered the circle in the tradition of clearing or parting the grass so the ceremony could proceed. American flags were evident everywhere and with that recognition of all war veterans and their efforts.
The announcer made it clear that this was a family event - "No alcohol, no politics, and no fussin, just a lot of fun."
Chief Buffalo Eagle of Spirit People of America was very pleased with the turnout and the success of the PowWow. He emphasized the authenticity of native american culture he planned to be sure the PowWow stayed true to even down to the requirements for vendors and participants.
With the many different tribes participating with many different customs, his job is not very easy, but his easy going, warm manner combined with his sincerity insured that this was not going to be just another tourist type of event.
I had recently spent an afternoon with Spirit People and felt their genuine warmth and respect for all things. They plan another PowWow in the Spring and we plan to be there too. We wouldn't miss it !
Editors note: Enjoy our photos, but please remember, these are NOT actors, these are real Native Americans celebrating their culture and heritage.
