FORT HOMER HESTERLY ARMORY - TO SAVE OR NOT ?

There have been many ideas floated around for the Fort Homer Hesterly Armory on North Howard Avenue. This cool looking building hosted many concerts in its better days.. Yes.Elvis did play there, but I will always remember the wrestling matches. The GREAT MALENKO was my favorite. And they were always at the Armory. (I have to confess, living in Pinellas County, I never went to a single match).

BUT with the completions of new facilities in Pinellas County, this building is being vacated by the National Guard and being left for the community. Future plans discussed include: a skating rink, advanced arts facilities including video and recording facilities, and more. Of Course, discussions of razing the building and starting all anew have also been discussed. The impact this project will have on the neighborhoods will be tremendous. Civitas has already presented some ideas on significant neighborhood changes just north of the interstate, only 10 blocks from the Armory. The beautiful, but neglected architecture in this neighborhood is screaming for renovation. We would sure like to hear your ideas and suggestions: please email them by clicking here.
