Me and Lance - Biking Iowa
ragbraigaspumps

RAGBRAI 2006 is only a memory for the thousands of participants now, but the challenge made by Lance Armstrong is clear.

At a speech to over 20,000 in Newton, Iowa, the 7 time Tour de France winner and cancer survivor challenged the Presidential contenders to increase funding for cancer research.

In a ten minute speech, Lance shared his plan to help relieve the pain that afflicts millions of Americans.

You can see and hear his speech here.

On the 7 day, almost 500 mile ride, I gave you an insight into Iowa and what RAGBRAI is all about.

  • Armory Decision Will Be Major Change in West Tampa and N. Hyde Park
  • armoryreview

The plan recommended by the Review Commission for the Fort Homer Hesterly Armory will significantly impact West and South Tampa. THIS PROJECT COULD BE BIGGER THAN THE CHANNELSIDE RETAIL COMPLEX.

The Heritage Square plan was recommended with plans for a Hotel, Retail/Festival Marketplace, Spa, Museum, and more. BUT NO RESIDENTIAL.

The plan is moving closer, however, many more steps are required before it becomes final including approval by the National Guard and the Mayor and City Council. Construction could start in about a year. The Tampa Tribune had supported a different proposal.

The impact this will have on business, real estate, traffic, and more in West Tampa will be substantial.

Find out about the meeting and the process here.

We can do what most other media can't.

See and hear the entire Heritage Square Proposal here.
  • Glam Rockers POISON and CINDERELLA Coming to the St. Pete Times Forum

POISON will be rocking Tampa on Saturday, August 19th at the St. Pete Times Forum with their 20 Years of Rock Tour !

"Nothin' But A Good Time" raced up both the MTV and Billboard charts. The band hit the road opening for David Lee Roth, but singles: "Fallen Angel," "Every Rose Has Its Thorn" (their first #1 single), "Your Mamma Don't Dance" sold eight million copies worldwide, and were featured in Time Magazine alongside Metallica as one of the largest grossing touring acts of that era put them in a league of their own.

Celebrating 20 Years with a new version of Grand Funk Railroad's "We're An American Band". POISON and CINDERELLA are ready to rock Tampa in Classic Style.

Win 2 Tickets to the Concert in our Trivia Contest this week. Enter our Contest he re.

  • Florida Sports Writers Enjoy Plushness
  • plush

This past weekend had the Florida Sports Writers enjoying the air conditioning and the plush facilities of the downtown Marriott in weekend long meeting with Florida teams.

We had originally been invited to attend, but were uninvited at the last moment. Something about us not being significant enough in the sports industry to be a part of such an important gathering.

During 7 days last week I was bike riding with 10,000 others across Iowa with 7 time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong. (I camped in a tent for 7 nights and rode almost 500 miles in lots of heat)

Shaun Weiskopf of our staff was at a Kickboxing event that attracted over 300 at the Cuban Club in Ybor City. Now being renovated, the Cuban Club is about to be a regular location for major boxing and wrestling events. (Probably haven't heard that in any Florida Sports Writers articles have you ?)

We did not see any of the Florida Sports Writers at either of those events. They were probably at the sports bar in the air conditioning of the plush Marriott congratulating themselves on their great sports coverage.
