Tampa was recently selected as the location for the 2011 International Dragon Boat Competition. The event is anticipated to bring representatives from over 50 countries to Tampa's downtown Seddon Channel for a multi day competition in August. The event is held every two years. The 2007 competition was held in Australia and the 2009 event is planned for Moscow, Russia. The announcement made today featured Paul Catoe from Tampa Bay and Company (the new name for the former Tampa Bay Convention and Visitors Bureau). Additonal presenters were Christine Canevari, Keith Greminger, Kevin Burns, and Terri Parnell. Mayor Iorio was on hand to give congratulations to the bid organizers. The event is expected to fill 15,000 room nights. Previous DragonBoat events have been held on Garrison Channel, between the St. Pete Times Forum and Harbour Island.
